The PLAY - Portuguese Music Awards, are making a comeback: 6th edition slated for May 16th

The PLAY - Portuguese Music Awards are gearing up for their 6th edition on May 16th at Lisbon's Coliseu dos Recreios, with the usual live broadcast on RTP1, RTP África, RTP Internacional, RTP Play, and Antena 1. This initiative, which saw a remarkable 13% growth in audience share in the previous edition, is once again graced by the hosting talents of Filomena Cautela and Inês Lopes Gonçalves. The unmistakable sonic identity of PLAY, crafted by Blim Records for its debut in 2019 and given a fresh touch in 2022, returns as a cornerstone of this initiative, playing a pivotal role in honoring and elevating Portuguese music.

Back in 2019, Blim Records got the call from Paulo Carvalho, the mastermind behind the PLAY - Portuguese Music Awards, to cook up a sonic identity (including Original Music, Sonic Logo, and Audio Post-Production) for the entire event and its TV broadcasts. Enter creators Ricardo Ferreira and Rui Ribeiro, who rolled up their sleeves and, in record time, birthed what is now the indelible and indispensable sonic identity of the PLAY awards.

"Our aim was to create a sonic and musical identity that's both cutting-edge and timeless. We also took great care to ensure that, stylistically, we were not creating something that aligned with any of the musical categories covered by the awards, while still capturing the essence and mission of this initiative," says Ricardo Ferreira. Rui Ribeiro spills some details about the musical creation process: "Since we knew a good chunk of the music would accompany the award presentations, especially the artists' journey from their seats to the stage, we settled on a rhythmic pace akin to an andante, seamlessly syncing with their deliberate strides." He adds, "Despite the tight deadline, the creative process flowed smoothly, and we had a lot of fun!”

This year marks the sixth consecutive appearance of the sonic identity crafted by Blim Records for the PLAY - Portuguese Music Awards, once again playing a pivotal role in bringing the event to life.

About the PLAY - Portuguese Music Awards

The PLAY - Portuguese Music Awards are an annual initiative by the PassMúsica association, in collaboration with RTP and Vodafone, dedicated to recognizing and celebrating homegrown musical talent. Audiogest and GDA joined forces in 2019 to birth this event, with the mission of shining a spotlight on Portuguese music, both nationally and internationally.

These awards shine a light on the standout songs and artists in the Portuguese music scene each year, showcasing the diversity and richness of our musical heritage. Teaming up with partners, Audiogest and GDA aim to establish this event as a cultural touchstone and a launchpad for Portuguese artists and music.

Through PLAY, Audiogest and GDA fulfill their mandate of championing cultural creation, fostering musical production, and acknowledging the role of economic players in elevating Portuguese music. As non-profit entities, they manage the collective rights of musical works in Portugal, representing both local and international producers and artists.
