Rui Ribeiro Unveils New Album, "Ephemeral Scenes": A Musical Portrait of Fleeting Beauty
Composer Rui Ribeiro presents his latest album, Ephemeral Scenes, a sonic meditation on impermanence and the fragile beauty of the world around us. Released by Blim Records and now available on all digital platforms, the album celebrates the brief, fragile moments of existence: a firefly's glow, the delicate lightness of a soap bubble, the rare bloom of the night-blooming cactus known as the “Queen of the Night”, or even an embrace we didn’t realize would be our last.
Written for a classic piano–violin–cello trio, the album moves beyond the confines of Western tradition, drawing deeply on Japanese aesthetics and philosophy. At its heart lies the concept of mono no aware—the heightened sensitivity to life’s transience, and the gentle melancholy that comes with recognizing it. This influence is clear in the subtle melodies and textures, which evoke a sense of serenity and encourage the listener to slow down.
At the piano, Rui Ribeiro is joined by cellist Sandra Martins and violinist Joana Borges, whose artistry breathes life into his compositions. “I chose Sandra and Joana not just for their immense talent,” the composer explains. “They both have a rare sensitivity to life’s fragility and to the small details that make it meaningful. That awareness comes through in their playing, adding emotional depth and a special kind of melancholy to the music”.
Ribeiro adds that “each of these small pieces seeks to celebrate the beauty of a single moment. As a whole, they create a broader portrait of the ephemerality of human life and our own species, especially when compared to the vastness of the universe”. Ultimately, Ephemeral Scenes is an invitation: to slow down, to listen closely, and to uncover the quiet beauty hidden in life’s most fleeting moments.
